Your Excellency, Mr. President,

Your Excellency, Mr. Chairman of Parliament,

Your Beatitude, Archbishop of Prešov, Metropolitan of the Czech Lands and Slovakia Rostislav,

Your Eminences, Most Reverend Hierarchs, Reverend Fathers, Mothers, Brothers and Sisters, Dear Guests!

I congratulate you on today’s glorious feast—Svetitskhovloba, the Commemoration of the Holy Robe of the Lord, and the Commemoration of the Holy Equals-to-the-Apostles, King Mirian and Queen Nana.

“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Ps. 118:24), says the Holy Prophet David.

Great is the reason for our joy and gratitude today! This year, Georgia marks the 1700th anniversary of the proclamation of Christianity as the state religion. Gathered in the majestic Cathedral of Svetitskhoveli, we together glorify the Lord and celebrate this most significant event for our Church and country.

I congratulate everyone on this historical date!

Today, we think in a special way about our past, present, and future; what was and is the force that ensured the salvation of the Georgian nation, despite so many upheavals?!

The Lord Jesus Christ declares: “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” The history of Georgia testifies that, despite many trials, falls, or sins, the Georgian people have never deviated from the Path of Christ; and the Lord, by His grace and mercy, has always helped and guided us on this Path.

By the Providence of God, as early as the first century, with the bringing of one of the greatest sacred treasures of Christianity—the Holy Robe of the Savior—began the history of our Church and nation, nurtured by the love of Christ. This was followed by the allotment of our nation to the Mother of God and the preaching of the Apostles of Christ: Andrew the First-Called, Simon the Zealot, Matthias, Bartholomew, and Thaddaeus.

The continuation of this apostolic path and labor was undertaken by the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Virgin Nino, when in the 4th century, by the Providence of God and the blessing of the Most Holy Mother of God, she set out toward our country and, through her preaching, introduced the Georgian nation to “the Truth and the Life”—our Lord Jesus Christ Himself. Her conversion of King Mirian and Queen Nana crowned this spiritual choice with the proclamation of Christianity as the state religion, which was followed in the 5th century by the granting of autocephaly to the Church of Georgia through the labors of the Holy King Vakhtang Gorgasali. It is symbolic that this great pious king rests precisely in this holy cathedral.

Of course, among these events, the bringing of the Holy Robe of the Savior to our country and its placement in Mtskheta, in the holy Cathedral of Svetitskhoveli, was especially prominent.

According to the teachings of the great 3rd-century ascetic, the Hieromartyr Cyprian of Carthage, the Lord’s Robe is a symbol of the unity coming from God, which the possessor of the Robe cannot violate. “The possession of Christ’s garment,” he writes, “cannot be achieved by one who violates and divides the Church of Christ.” The undivided Robe is also a symbol of the unified Church and, accordingly, of the Head of the Church, that is, our Lord Jesus Christ Himself.

Our ancestors well understood that the possession of the Robe is a great blessing from God, which means the divinely appointed purpose of labor—guardianship of the Robe—which implies caring for the unity of the Church and self-sacrifice for its defense. Possession of the Robe signifies spiritual fortitude, readiness to accept and defend the Truth, which the Georgian people have manifested so powerfully throughout their entire history.

The erection of Svetitskhoveli Cathedral became for us the beginning of the establishment of a new consciousness, a spiritual epoch. Through the miracle of the divinely radiant and myrrh-streaming Pillar, the Providence and power of God, His grace and boundless mercy upon the Georgian nation were revealed. Svetitskhoveli became one of the primary expressions of the faith, unity, and national consciousness of the Georgian nation.

In Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, the spiritual heritage of the Old and New Testaments is, in a way, united: the Holy Robe of the Lord as a symbol of unity and indivisibility of the Church, and the mantle of the Holy Prophet Elijah—one of the greatest holy relics of the Old Testament, which 600 years before the Nativity of Christ was brought by the Jews to our land and is buried here.

Devotion to these great sacred relics and to the Path of Christ ensured the salvation of our nation. This is precisely what our great figures always taught us. As Saint Ilia the Righteous (Chavchavadze) wrote: “Georgia suffered martyrdom and was crucified for Christ and was crowned with a crown of thorns, but did not let anyone shake the true faith… Christianity preserved for us our land, our language, our identity, our nationality… and has cared for us to this day.”

Therefore, we firmly believe that if we do not deviate from this Path, the grace of God, which has always protected Georgia from visible and invisible enemies, will continue to protect and shield us.

May the Lord grant us the strength to rightly fulfill this spiritual arena!

On this remarkable day, with special love and gratitude, we remember the ever-memorable Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II. His nearly half-century of service was tireless ministry, fatherly care, and prayer for the strengthening of the true faith and spiritual revival in our nation.

It is precisely his great labor that has yielded the good fruit of which we are witnesses today: the Church, the people, the authorities—together we celebrate the 1700th anniversary of the proclamation of Christianity as the state religion in Georgia.

This day also marks the Feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God, which reminds us once again that the Mother of God protects us from every misfortune and storm of life. Therefore, in times of sorrow or trial, we must ask her for protection, and she will certainly help us.

I congratulate you once again on this feast day! May God bless you and strengthen you!

Through the intercession of the Most Holy Mother of God, by the grace of the Holy Robe of the Lord and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, may God bless, strengthen, and unify Georgia.

“The Lord will give strength to His people; the Lord will bless His people with peace” (Ps. 29:11), Amen!
