The 64th mass baptism of infants by the Georgian Orthodox Church took place on Sunday at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Tbilisi.
Some 1,200 children were baptized into the Orthodox faith with the blessing of the Georgian Patriarch.
The mass baptism scheme is an initiative of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II, who has pledged to baptize the third and subsequent children in families whose parents were married within the Church. The goal of this initiative is to improve the demographic situation in the Caucasus country.
The first mass baptism of infants took place in January 2008 in Sameba, Tbilisi. Currently, the Patriarch of Georgia has some 42,000 godchildren.
