Speaking on Sunday during a ceremony in Cairo for one of the odd-numbered nights during the last 10 days of Ramadan, Egyptian president Abdel Fatah al-Sisi referred to a recent surge in attacks against Christians in the ancient country, mostly against the Coptic community.

The Egyptian leader said his government’s goal is to boost efforts for the peaceful co-existence between Muslims and Christians, adding characteristically, “… Egypt’s main goal is to preserve the essence of religion, to raise the moderate religious awareness and combat the extremist threats among the youth, adding that the enlightened religious discourse is the best way to fight extremist ideology.”
