A glimpse inside Liverpool’s only Greek Orthodox Church

The church of St Nicholas, which is nestled on Princes Avenue in Toxteth, is opening its doors to the public today as part of the Heritage open days.

Built in 1870, the imposing building is a replica of the famous Constantinople church St. Theodores, which was converted into a mosque during the Ottoman era and is now known as Vefa Kilise Mosque.

The remarkable Byzantine-style building is something of local landmark – but many residents may never have seen the stunning scenes inside.

Toxteth’s iconic building is actually a slightly larger version of the original church and was built by Greek shipping merchants who had settled in the area.

As one of only four purpose-built Greek Orthodox churches in the UK, the grade-II listed building has welcomed worshippers for nearly 150 years.

Notable features of the church include its remarkably ornate exterior with archways, domes and marble columns.

The interior has a screen with depictions of religious imagery and carved wooden doors known as the Beautiful Doors.

One of several remarkable religious buildings along Princes Avenue, the church reflects the multicultural aspect of the area throughout history and through to the present day.

The church regularly takes part in the heritage open days, giving a chance for visitors to see inside the remarkable building, as in open to the public this year on Saturday, September 14 between 11 and 3pm
