The ancient tradition of the spreading of the news of the True Cross was revived by the Greek Orthodox community in the Heliopolis district of Cairo, Egypt. The expatriate Greek community’s president, Arlette Monsef, welcomed the Metropolitan of Memphis, His Eminence Nikodimos, and Metropolitan of Hermopolis, His Eminence Nicholaos, during the event.
The ancient Church tradition refers to discovery of the True Cross by St. Helen, as signal fires were lit to quickly transmit the news from Jerusalem to Constantinople, where her son, St. Constantine, reigned over the Eastern Roman Empire.
