The Archbishop of America, His Eminence Elpidophoros, this week referred to the connection between Orthodox teaching and a socially just democracy, speaking at the annual conference of the St. Andrew’s Freedom Forum in Washington D.C.
This year’s event was dedicated to the memory of late US Congressman John Lewis, who was one of the leaders of the civil rights movement in the United States.

The topic of a relevant debate revolved around the question of whether “a socially just democracy creates a more perfect union”.

The Greek Orthodox Church’s contribution to the civil rights struggle is widely recognized in the United States, as reposed Archbishop Iakovos was one of the first white religious leaders to walk alongside Martin Luther King Jr. in a historic march in Selma, Alabama.
