Archbishop Georgios was enthroned as the 76th Primate of the Church of Nova Justiniana and All Cyprus on Sunday afternoon, in a ceremony at the Cathedral of the Apostle Barnabas in Nicosia.
Church bells rang out joyously as the elected Archbishop of Cyprus arrived to the cathedral.
The newly enthroned Archbishop said he accepts the task before him, recognizing the weight of his responsibility, as assigned to him by God.
His Beatitude added, “…In Cyprus, the Church has the first word. And all eyes are on me… The Church is a refuge for the people, where they turn to for answers to questions that plague them. It is my duty to stand by and support every individual.”
The enthronement ceremony was attended by numerous dignitaries from the island republic and abroad, including the President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, His Beatitude Ieronymos, and representatives of other Orthodox Churches and Christian dogmas.
The Greek state was represented by Education and Religious Affairs Minister Niki Kerameos.
