Brisbane: Commemorative events for the 51st anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus

With the blessings of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, His Grace Bishop Bartholomew of Brisbane attended a commemoration of the 51st anniversary of the Turkish invasion in Cyprus.

The evening commenced with a memorial service and wreath laying ceremony held at the Parish and Community of Saint George in South Brisbane.

Immediately following, a function was held at the Cypriot House in Brisbane, where His Grace urged politicians of all political parties to promote justice for Cyprus. Moreover, His Grace encouraged the gathering to continue praying to God for justice.

His Grace conveyed the love and blessings of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia and welcomed to Brisbane on behalf of His Eminence, Mr Andreas Grigoriou, Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and Head of Administration of the Presidency, representing the President of the Republic of Cyprus.

Besides Mr Grigorios the following guests were present: His Excellency Mr. Antonis Sammoutis, High Commissioner for Cyprus, Mr. Bico Athanasas, Honourary Consular Secretary of the Honourary Consulate-General of Greece in Queensland, The Honourable Fiona Simpson MP, Minister for Women and Women’s Economic Security, Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships and Minister for Multiculturalism, representing the Premier of Queensland, The Honourable David Crisafulli MP, Mrs. Charis Mullen MP, Shadow Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Minister for Public Works and Member for Jordan, Ms Renee Coffey MP, Member for Griffith, and Dr. Barbara O’Shea MP, Member for South Brisbane.
