There will be a lot of moving parts behind the scene and in view of bystanders as a long-awaited church construction project moves forward in Grand Traverse County.
Thursday the dome will be raised on the Archangel Gabriel Greek Orthodox Church off of U.S. 31. in Williamsburg.
The dome is 42,000 pounds and 92 feet wide.
The crane arrived Wednesday and finale preparations are being made for the dome to go into place Thursday starting at 7 a.m.
According to the church’s Facebook page, the reason for the early morning start is due to wind. With so much weight in the air, crews need as little wind as possible.
The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office and volunteers will be on hand helping direct traffic onto the property and into designated parking areas.
Drivers are asked to avoid parking along U.S. 31.
The viewing area will be clearly marked by an orange fence and coordinated by volunteers.
“It is no easy job for any construction company, but we are planning to do it by God’s grace and we will raise it up to about 55 feet. That will complete the beautiful location and building of the Orthodox Church,” said Father Ciprian Streza.
