The destructive wildfires that recently ravaged Cyprus have prompted an immediate and heartfelt response from the Church of Cyprus. Following the devastation that caused loss of life, extensive property damage, and ecological disaster, the Holy Synod has decided to hold a nationwide fundraising campaign on Sunday, 3 August 2025, in all churches across the island. The goal is to provide financial aid to those affected by the fires.

In an official encyclical read during church services, the Holy Synod addressed the faithful with words of deep sorrow and solidarity: “We have all witnessed the unspeakable pain and suffering of our brothers and sisters caused by the terrible tragedy of the numerous wildfires on our island. The images we have seen are truly shocking.”

The Synod highlighted the scale of the catastrophe, noting the loss of human lives, destruction of property, and the ravaging of the natural environment. It was emphasised that many people have even lost their means of livelihood.

“As the Church and as Cypriot Greeks, we cannot and must not remain indifferent or passive in the face of this situation,” the encyclical stressed, calling on the community to respond with generosity and solidarity.

The fundraising effort is intended to “give our people the opportunity to express their heartfelt support for our severely affected brothers and sisters,” alongside contributions from the Holy Archdiocese and Metropolises.

In closing, the Church made a heartfelt appeal to all: “Please give generously to the collection plate that will soon be passed around for this cause. This will be an expression of our love and care for our fellow human beings.”

The Church of Cyprus calls for a collective mobilisation, hoping that unity and practical love will bring comfort and healing to those wounded by this calamity.
