Today, April 16, the Greek Orthodox Church commemorates the memory and works of Elder Amphilochios Makris of Patmos.
Patmos is the eastern Aegean island where St. John the Theologian wrote the Book of Revelation and where St. Christodoulos founded the Monastery of St. John.
The Elder Amphilochios, born Athanassios, worked to establish a commune that combined a strict hermit’s lifestyle with prolific missionary activity to the benefit of the faithful.
Amphilochios passed away in 1970 at the age of 82.
