Crucial period ahead for Church-state dialogue in Greece

The upcoming period is deemed as significant for the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece, with the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, His Beatitude Ieronymos, on Wednesday briefing members of the permanent Holy Synod over his most recent contacts with top ministers, as well as Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Pending issues affecting Church-state relations remain on the agenda of recent talks.

During the meeting between Archbishop Ieronymos and Mitsotakis both sides reiterated their volition to restart a dialogue, but on a new basis.

According to reports, Mitsotakis, who formed a government after his New Democracy (ND) party won the July 7 election, has personally initiated a direct dialogue with the Primate of the Church of Greece.

 

In a related development, Development & Investments Minister Adonis Georgiadis was received by Archbishop Ieronymos on Thursday morning at the Archdiocese of Athens.

According to the minister, “… we have an excellent cooperation with the Church, and we’re set to solve various issues. A framework for much closer cooperation is beginning”.

On his part, the Archbishop said cooperation will be towards the benefit of our people, as he stressed.
