The man who has come to hate the world has escaped sorrow. But he who has an attachment to anything visible is not yet delivered from grief. For how is it possible not to be sad at the loss of something we love? We need to have great vigilance in all things. But we must give our whole attention to this above everything else. I have seen many people in the world, who by reason of cares, worries, occupations and vigils, avoided the wild desires of their body. But after entering the monastic life, and in complete freedom from anxiety, they polluted themselves in a pitiful way by the disturbing demands of the body.
Let us pay close attention to ourselves so that we are not deceived into thinking that we are following the straight and narrow way when in actual fact we are keeping to the wide and broad way. The following will show you what the narrow way means: mortification of the stomach, all-night standing, water in moderation, short rations of bread, the purifying draught of dishonor, sneers, derision, insults, the cutting out of one’s own will, patience in annoyances, unmurmuring endurance of scorn, disregard of insults, and the habit, when wronged, of bearing it sturdily; when slandered, of not being indignant; when humiliated, not to be angry; when condemned, to be humble. Blessed are they who follow the way we have just described, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.4
No one will enter the heavenly bridechamber wearing a crown unless he makes the first, second and third renunciation. I mean the renunciation of all business, and people, and parents; the cutting out of one’s will; and the third renunciation, of the conceit that dogs obedience. ‘Come ye out from among them, and be ye separate,’ said the Lord, ‘and touch not the unclean world.’ For who amongst them has ever worked any miracles? Who has raised the dead? Who has driven out devils? No one. All these are the victorious rewards of monks, rewards which the world cannot receive; and if it could, then what is the need of asceticism or solitude?

Cel ce a urât lumea a scăpat de întristare ; iar cel ce e împătimit de ceva din cele văzute încă n-a scăpat de întristare. Căci cum nu se va întrista de lipsa a ceea ce iubeşte?
Trezvia
În toate avem nevoie de multă trezvie. Dar mai ales la aceasta să luăm aminte cu înţelepciune, înainte de celelalte: Am văzut pe mulţi scăpând în lume barca trupului lor prin griji, ocupaţii, nedormiri din pricina grijilor vieţii; iar venind aceştia în viaţa călugărească şi lepădînd toată grija, s-au întinat în chip jalnic de mişcările trupului.
Calea cea strâmtă
Să luăm aminte la noi înşine, ca nu cumva, spunînd că umblăm pe calea strâmtă şi plină de necazuri, să ne rătăcim ţinând pe cealaltă lată şi largă. Cale a strâmtă ţi-o va pricinui întristarea pântecelui, starea de toată noaptea în picioare, apa cu măsură, puţinătatea pâinii, băutur a curăţitoare a necinstirii, batjocurile, luările în râs, tăierea voilor proprii, răbdarea certărilor, primirea în tăcere a dispreţuirii, silnicia ocărilor, răbdarea neclintită a nedreptăţirii, suportarea bârfirilor fără supărare, răbdarea fără mânie a neluării în seamă, primirea ocărilor cu smerenie. Fericiţi sunt cei ce umblă pe calea amintită, că a lor este împărăţia cerurilor.
Cele trei lepădări
Nimenea nu va intra în cămara cerească de nuntă purtînd cunună, dacă nu a săvârşit prima, a doua şi a treia lepădare, adică de toate lucrurile, de toţi oamenii, până şi de părinţi ; a doua – tăierea voii proprii ; şi lepădarea a treia, de slava deşartă, care urmează ascultării.
Răsplata
«Ieşiţi din mijlocul lor şi vă despărţiţi şi nu vă atingeţi de necurăţia lumii, zice Domnul». Căci cine dintre ei a făcut vreo minune vreodată? Cine a înviat morţi? Cine a scos draci? Nimenea. Toate acestea sunt răsplătirile călugărilor, pe care lumea nu le poate cuprinde. Căci dacă ar putea, ar fi de prisos nevoinţa sau retragerea.
