At the Holy Royal and Stavropegic Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Kykkos, the established annual Memorial Service of the First President of the Republic of Cyprus, the late Archbishop and Ethnarch Makarios III, was held on Sunday morning, 3 August 2025, on the occasion of the 48th anniversary of his repose.

The Divine Liturgy and the Memorial Service were presided over by His Beatitude Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus, who was joined by the members of the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus. The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, was present, while the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Dr. Athena Michaelidou, delivered a memorial speech.

The legacies left to us by Archbishop Makarios III are the only ones that will lead us out of the current impasse, declared Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus, during the annual memorial service.

Asked if the Late Archbishop Makarios’s legacies are still alive, he said that “if we honour him every year with such magnificence, we must also honour his legacies. Because they are the only ones that will lead us out of the current impasse.”

“So many times we have tried other paths, the path of continuous concessions, without them leading anywhere. We hope that the legacy he left us most recently — that this is a matter of invasion and occupation, a matter of human rights — will be the path we follow, so that we may be able to break free and remain as Hellenism in this land,” concluded the Archbishop.
