A delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, led by its President, Ms Petra Bayr, and including Mr Ioannis Oikonomou, Member of Parliament for Phthiotis, visited the Ecumenical Patriarchate and met with His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
During the meeting, the delegation discussed with the Ecumenical Patriarch the leading role played by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in promoting human rights, environmental protection, and the rule of law.
In particular, Mr Oikonomou had the opportunity to discuss with His All-Holiness the progress of discussions with the Turkish government regarding the reopening of the Theological School of Halki. In a related social media post, the Greek parliamentarian described the matter as “an issue of immense importance for the Orthodox Church and our fellow Orthodox Christians throughout the world.”
“Every conversation and communication with the Patriarch of our Nation, His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, is a blessing and an inspiration,” Mr Oikonomou remarked in the same post.
