New Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will arrive at the education and religious affairs ministry on Thursday, his first – and highly symbolic – visit to a ministry after being sworn-in as the premier on Monday.
Moreover, as widely reported, a file with the new center-right government’s priorities in the education sector has already been handed to new Minister Niki Kerameos.
Mitsotakis and his center-right New Democracy (ND) had repeatedly stated over the recent election campaign the priorities include abolition of the unique university “asylum” regime in Greece, as well as reviewing recent revisions in Greece’s penal code by the previous government.
The Church of Greece’s Holy Synod had expressed its opposition to abolition of articles against the insult to religion and the deceased, revisions that came in the very last days of the last Parliament, and after the former prime minister had indicated that he would seek a snap election.
Church-state relations are also high on the new minister’s priorities.
