The Archbishop of America, His Eminence Elpidophoros, on Sunday attended events commemorating the grim anniversary of the Turkish invasion in Cyprus in July 1974 — organized by local Cypriot organizations, and held at the Archangel Michael Cathedral in Port Washington, New York.
The Archbishop also presided at a memorial service for the victims of the invasion, in the presence of Cypriot and Greek diplomats and members of the Greek-American community.
In a statement, he said “…We all paid dearly for the Cyprus issue, and it affects us all, allow me to speak, not as the Archbishop, but to speak as a native of Constantinople, as a Greek.”
