An exodios funeral service will be held on Saturday for the reposed in the Lord former Bishop of Zahumlje, Herzegovina and the Littoral Atanasije Jevtić.
Bishop Jevtić, one of the most significant contemporary theologians of the Serbian Church, reposed on Thursday at the age of 83.
The reposed hierarch’s body will lay in state at the Metropolitan Cathedral in the town of Trebinje, where the exodios funeral service will take place on Saturday.
A litany will subsequently proceed to the Monastery of Tvrdoš, where the interment will follow.
One of the reposed Bishop’s last addresses, in Greek, came during the presentation of St. Justin the New’s “Dogmatics – Orthodox Philosophy of Truth”, an edition published and unveiled by the Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopedi in January 2019.
Bishop Atanasije was born in a village near the city of Brdarica, in the former Yugoslavia.
He studied theology at the Seminary of St. Sava Seminary in Belgrade, at the Theological Faculty of the Serbian Orthodox Church, as well as at the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s Theological School of Halki, and at the University of Athens’s school of theology, where he was awarded a doctoral degree in 1967 for his thesis, entitled “The Ecclesiology of the Apostle Paul According to St. John Chrysostom.”
He taught at the St. Serge Institute in Paris and the theological faculty in Belgrade, where he served as dean.
Bishop Atanasije was one of the founders of the theological faculty of the St. Basil of Ostrog in Foca, of which he was elected its rector in 1994.
He was a spiritual offspring St. Justin (Popovic), by whom he was tonsured in 1960.
Consecrated a Bishop in 1991, he retired in 1996 due to health reason.
The reposed hierarch was an unwavering advocate of the rights of persecuted Serbs in Kosovo, and authored numerous books and dozens of articles in a variety of languages.
