The inaugural veneration of the memory of Ieronymos Simonopetritis, since the reposed elder was canonized last November by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, was held today by the Holy Community of Mount Athos.
This 20th century saint arrived at the Holy Monastery of Simonos Petra, on Mount Athos, at the age of 17, where he remained as a monk for 43 years, serving as its Abbot from 1920 to 1931.
He reposed in 1957 while serving as the spiritual guide and curator of the Simonos Petra glebe of the Ascension, in the foothills of Mt. Hymettus overlooking the greater Athens area from the east.
