Today, Feb. 9, marks International Greek Language Day, with the occasion also honoring the memory of the Greek national poet Dionysios Solomos, who wrote Greece’s national anthem ”Hymn to Liberty,” and who passed away on Feb. 9, 1857.

This annual commemoration seeks to highlight the Greek language’s fundamental role and defining contribution in the development and establishment of European and world literacy and culture.

In a message issued for Greek Language Day, the Archbishop of Australia, His Eminence Makarios, stressed that “…Our Holy Archdiocese will not cease to maintain at the forefront of its mission and work, the facilitation of educational structures, which, as modern “arks”, take the lead in saving the language, but also the traditions and all the precious valuables of our faith and our people.”

Several programs and features have been posted on the Pemptousia television platform on the occasion of Greek Language Day.
