King Charles III on Tuesday made a high-profile reference to Greek Orthodoxy, during his Christmas message, which was watched by millions of television viewers in the United Kingdom.

The British monarch spoke of his “life-long wish” to visit Bethlehem and the Church of the Nativity, which he fulfilled in January 2020.

As Charles spoke, images of his meetings with Orthodox clerics and the Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Beatitude Theophilos III, appeared.

Charles III is a well-known philhellene and regular visitor to Greece. He was present in Athens and gave a speech during last year’s events to mark the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution, while he has often visited Mount Athos away from pomp and the limelight.
