More than 50,000 people rallied in the streets of Belgrade on Sunday to protest against the holding of a so-called “EuroPride” event in the country.

In a related announcement, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said the upcoming parade through Belgrade will not go ahead.

During a news conference, Vucic said the event – scheduled to take place in the third week of September – would be “postponed or cancelled” due to “recent tensions with its former province Kosovo”, as well as concerns regarding skyrocketing energy and food costs.

The large protest rally in Belgrade coincided with the great feast day of the Dormition of the Theotokos, the All-Holy Virgin Mary, as celebrated with the Julian calendar.
