The reposed Metropolitan of Drama Pavlos was laid to rest on Tuesday afternoon in the ecclesiastical bishopric he led as its shepherd for the past 17 years, and a day after suddenly being hospitalized.

The exodios funeral service was officiated by the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, His Beatitude Ieronymos, and held at the Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple cathedral, in the city of Drama.

Numerous faithful, along with clergy, monks, nuns, Mount Athos Elders, office-holders as well as representatives of the state and military were also on hand for funeral services.

In his condolences to Archbishop Ieronymos, the Patriarch of All Romania, His Beatitude Daniel, cited the pain caused by the news of the unexpected death of Metropolitan Pavlos, and referred to the “extraordinary love” shown by the reposed hierarch for “…keeping alive the moments of friendly and fraternal visits he made to Romania.”

In his message, His Beatitude adds, “…For all that the late Metropolitan Pavlos, our brother in Christ, has meant to us, for the Romanian faithful and for Romania, we express our gratitude and our appreciation and pray to God to repose his soul in a place of brightness, in peace and in the love of the Holy Trinity.”

Co-officiating was the Metropolitan of Xanthi and PeriThorios, His Eminence Panteleimon, who has been appointed as the widowed Metropolis’ locum tenens until a new Metropolitan of Drama is elected.
