Numerous legal challenges have been filed in Ukrainian courts over the issue of autocephaly granted to the Orthodox Church of the Ukraine.
A regional court this month threw out a lawsuit filed by a group of citizens, who claimed that the country’s president did not have the right to request – from the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople – the Tomos for autocephaly of the specific Church.
Ukraine’s constitutional court has also broached the issue of the president’s right to actively participate in such an ecclesiastical matter.
