His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia met with the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr Kyriakos Mitsotakis, on Monday, 3 November, in Athens.
His Eminence, who was accompanied by His Grace Bishop Kyriakos of Melbourne, was warmly received by the Greek Prime Minister at the Maximos Mansion.
The meeting took place in a cordial and constructive atmosphere, during which matters of mutual interest were discussed, focusing particularly on the needs of the Greek diaspora in Australia. Special emphasis was placed on the agreement between Greece and Australia for the avoidance of double taxation, which, as the Prime Minister informed, is expected to be finalised successfully in the near future.
Furthermore, Archbishop Makarios briefed Prime Minister Mitsotakis on the activities and work of the Orthodox Church in Australia, reaffirming its commitment to preserving the Greek identity of the diaspora and to strengthening their bonds with the motherland.
The Prime Minister of Greece congratulated His Eminence for the enormous contribution of the Church to Hellenism on the fifth continent, assured him that the Greek Government will continue to care for and practically support the Greek Diaspora, and expressed his intention to visit Australia within the first half of 2026.
