On Thursday, 7 May 2026, The Ambassador of Australia to Greece, Her Excellency Ms Alison Duncan, visited the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece responsible for matters concerning the Greek Diaspora, Mr Ioannis Loverdos, in order to present the commemorative collector’s coin issued by the Royal Australian Mint for the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, honouring the Australian soldiers who fought alongside the Greeks during the Second World War.
The Ambassador of Australia emphasised that the coin symbolises the deep friendship and historical bonds between Greece and Australia, which were forged through shared sacrifices and struggles. She also referred in particular to the significance of the Battle of Crete for collective memory and for the spirit of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC).
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs thanked the Ambassador of Australia for the initiative, stressing that such actions highlight the enduring friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
