Members of the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus convened on Monday, a week after the repose in the Lord of Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II.
The upcoming election for a new Archbishop of Nova Justiniana and All Cyprus will be the first under the Cypriot Church’s new charter, which was approved and enacted in 2010.
As we’ve previously reported, the Metropolitan of Paphos, His Eminence Georgios, has been appointed as the locum tenens of the Archbishop’s throne, meaning he will commence all the foreseen, under the charter, procedures for the election.
Based on the charter’s specific statutes, the final election among three eligible hierarchs of the Church of Cyprus must be completed within 40 days after the throne has been vacated.
