The dour 200th anniversary of the abhorrent Destruction of Chios by the Ottoman Turks was commemorated this week, with the Metropolitan of Chios, Psara and Oinousses, His Eminence Markos, celebrating the Holy Saturday Resurrection service at the historic monastery of St. Minas, where the Ottoman horde massacred the monks and some 3,000 women and children in 1822.
The treasured standard of the Greek Revolution, which is preserved at the Holy Monastery of Aghia Lavra, in the Kalavryta district of the Peloponnese, was welcomed by the clergy and people of Chios, as part of the memorial and commemorative events.
