An annual memorial service for those who fought and fell during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in the summer of 1974, was held at the Church of the Annunciation in Perth, on Sunday.
The memorial service took place at the end of the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, which was officiated by Archdiocese of Australia’s Bishop Elpidios of Kyanea, and in the presence of Martha Mavromatis, the High Commissioner of Cyprus in Australia.
On behalf of the Archbishop of Australia, His Eminence Makarios, Bishop Elpidios referred to the tragic events of July and August 1974 and how the struggle for a fair solution to the Cyprus issue must continue until the glorious day arrives and justice is granted to Cyprus.
In a related development, the parish of St. Panteleimon, in Melbourne, has hosted a fund-raising campaign in support of Orthodox missionary work in the west Africa country ofa Sierra Leone, with 35,000 Australian dollars raised so far.
