More threats, belligerence by ‘elusive ally’ Turkey against Greece

An increasingly belligerent and bellicose Erdogan regime in Turkey again threatened Greece this week if the latter exercises its international legal rights regarding an extension of territorial waters.

This time around it was Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu who again threatened with aggression in case Athens extends territorial waters around the large island of Crete.

In an immediate response, a foreign ministry spokesman in Athens underlined that Turkey should understand the rules that are followed by all civilized and well-governed countries, while adding that the threat to use of violence because one doesn’t like the rules is reminiscent of previous centuries and certainly not to the 21st century.

When asked about the latest hostility emanating from the Islamist Erdogan administration, a US State Department spokesperson also expressed displeasure, in response to a question by a Greek correspondent, during a daily press briefing.

The spokesperson added: “…At a time when unity is most needed among our Allies, the United States regrets the escalation of provocative statements. We urge all our Allies to avoid threats and provocative rhetoric that will only increase tension and help no one.”
