The Russian embassy in Zagreb is leading efforts to restore the only Russian Orthodox Church in Croatia.
The chapel was built by Russian émigrés in Croatia during the 1920s.
In his comments, carried by the news agency Tass, Russian ambassador Anvar Azimov said the St. Nicholas the Wonderworker church was built on the coast of the town of Crikvenica in 1924. The church’s construction was financed by the widow of Russian diplomat Nikolai Gartvig.
Azimov was quoted by Tass as saying “…the church is very beautiful, located on the coast, and many Russian tourists come to it in the summer, but it’s not functioning.”
