The new ecclesiastical year, or indiction, begins for the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece on Sunday, Sept. 1, which, among others, marks the commencement of the Church’s permanent Holy Synod, under a new composition of hierarchs, in what will be the 163rd synodical period.
Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, His Beatitude Ieronymos, has already conveyed the official documents to specific Church Metropolitans to participate as members of the new Holy Synod. Should a Metropolitan decline to serve as a Holy Synod member, by citing a serious reason, then a written and timely response is required towards other members of the Holy Synod – with the next, in seniority, hierarch chosen as a replacement in the new synodical period.

The first session of the Church of Greece’s new permanent Holy Synod is schuledued to convene on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
