The general secretary of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy, Greek lawmaker Maximos Harakopoulos, in a congratulatory letter to the new Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church, His Holiness Porfirije, noted that “…the Serbian people maintained its identity and preserved its valuable spiritual heritage, despite the adversity and the assaults it faced through the centuries, even recently, through its Orthodox tradition.”
The message came as His Holiness met on Wednesday with the President of Serbia, Alexander Vucic.
The new Patriarch of the Serbian Church thanked the president for attending his enthronement and for his words of praise.
He added “…First of all, I emphasize that I am not a politician, not because I have no affinity for politics, but because I think that the Church is a body that, no matter how difficult, sometimes impossible, aims to build bridges and overcome polarization.”
