Nikos Christodoulides elected as eighth president of Republic of Cyprus

Former Cypriot foreign minister Nikos Christodoulides was elected as the eighth president of the Republic of Cyprus on Sunday evening, following results of the second round of a presidential election on the east Mediterranean island republic.
With all votes counted, Christodoulides received nearly 52 percent of the vote, compared to slightly more than 48 percent for Andreas Mavroyiannis.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was among the first world leaders to call Christodoulides and offer his congratulations, while inviting him to Athens for his first official visit as the head of the state of the island republic.

Congratulations were also conveyed by Greek President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
