The world continues to watch in shock and sadness as a sixth day of warfare erupted in Ukraine, following an all-out Russian military invasion last week.
According to the most recent reports, combat was taking place at the gates of Kiev, Kharkov and Mariupol.
From the beginning, the Primates of the world’s Orthodox Churches have called for peace and an end to hostilities.
On Monday, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, His All Holiness Bartholomew I, visited the Ukrainian consulate in the Bosporus metropolis to again convey, in person no less, the Mother Church’s support and solidarity for the Ukrainian people.
The Holy Eparchial Synod of the Church of Crete, meanwhile, was the latest autocephalous Orthodox Church to express its support with the Ukrainian people.
Members of the Holy Synod also expressed their dismay over the tragic developments occurring in the eastern European country, while extending prayers for the people of that country. Additionally, hierarchs of the Church of Crete expressed concern for the ethnic Greek community in southeastern Ukraine and conveyed condolences to the families of the victims of the war.
On the political front, the dire situation in Ukraine was the focus of a Parliamentary debate in Greece’s legislature on Tuesday, at the political leaders’ level.
Among others, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis referred to a clear violation of the UN’s Charter, one prohibiting the use of violence, as ordered by Russian President Putin.
