Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Orthodox Church has expressed deep sorrow and compassion following a tragic road accident in western Romania that claimed the lives of seven Greek citizens and left three others seriously injured.
In a message released after the incident, the Patriarch of Romania conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and offered prayers for the recovery of the wounded, entrusting the victims to God’s mercy and care.
The message comes amid widespread grief after a minibus carrying Greek nationals was involved in a fatal collision near the village of Lugojelul, in Timiș County. Romanian authorities confirmed that the crash occurred on a major national road in the early hours, prompting a large-scale emergency response and an investigation into the accident’s circumstances.
According to Greek and Romanian media reports, the victims were supporters of the Greek football club PAOK Thessaloniki, travelling through Romania en route to France to attend a European competition match. The collision with a heavy vehicle proved devastating, resulting in multiple fatalities at the scene.
The tragedy has resonated strongly in both Romania and Greece, prompting reactions from church leaders, government officials, and the wider public. In this context, Patriarch Daniel’s message underscores a call to prayer, solidarity, and compassion for those affected by a loss that has crossed national borders.
