The Patriarchate of Jerusalem on Tuesday commemorated the Holy New Martyr Philoumenos, who suffered a martyr’s death at the shrine of Jacob’s Well in November 1979, where he served as Hegoumen, or abbot.
St. Philoumenos, as a new martyr, was included in the Hagiologion, the ecclesiastical calendar presenting all the saints in the order of their feast day, beginning in 2009. Every year his memory is honored at the place of his martyrdom, where the abbot for the last 40 years, the Elder Archimandrite Ioustinos, has overseen construction of a magnificent Church.
The Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Beatitude Theophilos III, on Tuesday officiated at the Divine Liturgy at this cathedral, above Jacob’s Well.
