The historic Holy Monastery of Aghia (St.) Lavra in the mountainous northwest Peloponnese was the setting on Tuesday – Clean Tuesday, the second day of Great Lent – for the recreation of the oath-taking by the Greek revolutionaries, which took place on the eve of the commencement of the War of Independence in March 1821.
The event is scheduled to begin at 19.30 Athens time on Tuesday, March 16, the second day of Great Lent.

The Orthodoxia news agency and online platform Pemptousia live streamed the event.
The recreation was the first in 200 years since revolutionaries gathered on the eve of the Feast Day of Alexis, Man of God, to swear an oath to fight, and if necessary, die for Greece’s liberation from Ottoman Muslim rule.
