On the morning of Friday, 10 July, His Eminence Metropolitan Prodromos of Rethymno and Avlopotamos, responding to the kind invitation of Lieutenant Colonel Emmanouil Mourtzakis, Commanding Officer of the 548th Airborne Infantry Battalion and Senior Commander of the Rethymno Garrison, visited the Rethymno Military Camp, where he celebrated a Memorial Service for the repose of the souls of the imprisoned soldiers of the 5th Cretan Division, who died as prisoners under martyrdom and harsh conditions in Larisa in July 1941.
Following the Memorial Service, which was attended by Ms Mary Lioni, Deputy Regional Governor of Rethymno; Mr Michalis Sarris, Deputy Regional Governor for Transport and Communications of the Region of Crete; and representatives of the Armed Forces and Security Services, a commemorative address was delivered on the sacrifice of the soldiers of the 5th Cretan Division in Larisa. The commemoration concluded with a memorial reception.
