The Moscow Patriarchate’s head of external church relations, Russian Orthodox Metropolitan of Volokolamsk, His Eminence Hilarion, arrived in the southern Greece city of Corinth this week, where he was received by the Metropolitan of Corinth, His Eminence Dionysius.
Hilarion, who is also a permanent member of the Russian Church’s Holy Synod, is accompanied by Archpriest Igor Yakimchuk, DECR secretary for inter-Orthodox relations, and Hieromonk Grigori Sokolov.
The delegation of Russian Orthodox hierarchs visited the archaeological site of ancient Corinth, including Gallio’s Bema – the site of the Apostle Paul’s trial before the Roman proconsul, a large elevated rostrum standing prominently in the centre of the Forum of ancient Corinth.
One of the main purposes of the visit, in fact, was to walk in the steps where the Apostle Paul lived and preached for nearly one and a half years.
The delegation later arrived at the Cathedral of the Apostle Paul in the modern-day city of Corinth.
