Cum și-a petrecut viața și cum a ajuns la sfințenie Sfântul Iosif Isihastul? Citiți un fragment dintr-o scrisoare a acestuia:
Când, rugându-te şi cerând de la Dumnezeu ceva, ajungi la deznădejde, atunci este aproape de tine împlinirea cererii. Hristos vrea să vindece vreo patimă ascunsă din tine, de aceea amâna împlinirea cererii. Dacă primeşti mai repede decât te aştepţi tu, patima ta rămâne nevindecata. Dacă aştepţi, primeşti şi ceea ce ai cerut şi vindecarea patimii.
Şi atunci te vei bucura cu bucurie mare şi vei mulţumi cu căldura lui Dumnezeu, care pe toate le zideşte cu înţelepciune şi le face spre folosul nostru. Nu ai niciun folos, deci, dacă te mâhneşti, dacă te superi, dacă spui cuvinte grele. Trebuie să-ţi închizi gura. Nimeni să nu înțeleagă ce ai tu. Să iasă abur pe ochi, nu pe nas. Să nu oftezi, pentru a te uşura, zice-se, ci să te linişteşti. Prin aşteptare şi îndelungă-rabdare vei arde pe diavol.
Eu – martor îmi este Domnul, Cel ce pierde pe toţi cei care rostesc minciuni – mult m-am folosit din ceea ce îţi spun acum. Atât de mari şi grele erau ispitele încât credeam că de durere o să-mi iasă sufletul precum fumul pe horn. Şi totuşi, după ce trece încercarea, vine atâta mângâiere, ca şi când ai fi în rai, fără trup. Te iubeşte Hristos, te iubeşte Maica Domnului, te laudă Sfinţii, Îngerii se minunează de tine.
Vezi câte bunătăţi aduc ispitele şi necazurile? Dacă vrei să vezi, să guşti şi tu iubirea lui Hristos, îndură ceea ce vine asupra ta. Nu în ceea ce-ţi place ţie, ci în ceea ce vrea Domnul să te încerce. Nimic din ceea ce facem noi de bună voie nu este atât de folositor cât este ceea ce ne trimite Domnul fără încuviinţarea noastră. Dumnezeu vrea că vrăjmaşul diavol să lupte pe om luptă crâncenă, os peste os, sânge peste sânge. Atât încât să se topească precum ceara la faţa focului.
