A shocking acid attack targeted seven Metropolitans of the Church of Greece on Wednesday afternoon, with at least three sustaining serious injuries that required admission to a north Athens hospital’s burn unit.

The perpetrator is reportedly either a clergyman who appeared before a synodal disciplinary hearing or one of his supporters.

The Metropolitans were hearing the case when the suspect threw a caustic liquid at them. One police officer who rushed to intervene was also injured.

The injured are the Metropolitans of Glyfada, Zakynthos, Kifissia, Arta, Kassandria and Driinoupolis.

The heinous incident took place at the Petraki Monastery in central Athens, where members of the Holy Synod of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece had convened only hours earlier.
