A spokesman for the Jordanian monarch, King Abdullah, this week reiterated the latter’s intent to personally finance restoration works at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem.
A statement to the same effect, by King Abdullah himself two weeks ago, generated discussions and concerns in regional media that such financing may, in the future, raise ownership issues over the Holy Site.
The spokesman for the Jordanian throne, however, reiterated that the grants by King Abdullah contain no attached strings, while stressing that standing agreements signed with relevant authorities and representatives of the Orthodox Church are the product of a very high level of trust that has been developed over the past few years.
The current grant comes after a previous donation of 1.4 million USD.
