Symposium in Bucharest on Fall of the Berlin Wall, toppling of communism in Romania

A symposium was held on Thursday in Bucharest at the Romanian Academy on the subject of the October 1989 fall of the Berlin wall and the Christmas revolution that toppled the communist regime two months later in Romania.

A message by the Patriarch of All Romania, His Beatitude Daniel, was read out at the opening of the symposium.

His message, in part, read: “The 20th century was a difficult moment for all of Europe. After the traumatic experience of two world wars, Eastern Europe was forced into the nightmare of the communist era. The Orthodox Churches in this region of the planet suffered persecution.”
