On Wednesday, 13 May, our Church honoured the memory of Saint Glykeria, who was born in Traianoupolis and was martyred in the 2nd century AD in Heraclea of Eastern Thrace. In the Holy Metropolis of Alexandroupolis, the feast took place at the Church dedicated to her in the Baths of Traianoupolis, the birthplace of the Saint, and was solemnly celebrated.
On the eve of the feast, in the afternoon of 12 May, the Great Hierarchical Vespers with the blessing of the loaves was celebrated, presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Anthimos of Alexandroupolis. Many faithful from the region participated in the festal service, honouring the memory of our local Saint.
In his brief homily, the local Hierarch referred to Saint Glykeria, who placed her faith and trust in the Risen Christ above all else, even unto martyrdom. Referring to the various development plans anticipated for the region, he noted that “we must be certain that the one thing which will surely remain unchanged is the presence of Christ, whom we are called to honour at every opportunity given to us. For this reason, we must place Christ above our lives, just as the honoured Saint Glykeria did through her example and martyrdom.”
On the day of the feast itself, on the morning of Wednesday, 13 May, Matins and the festal Divine Liturgy were celebrated with the participation of a large number of faithful.
