The Church today, May 30, venerates the memory of St. Emilia, the mother of St. Basil the Great.
Emilia was the daughter of a early Christian martyr and lived in the Asia Minor city of Caesarea in the 4th century AD.
Ten children were born to the Emilia and the elder Basil, her husband: five sons and five daughters. Five of them were later numbered among the saints: Basil the Great; Macrina who was an example of ascetic life; Gregory, afterwards bishop of Nyssa; Peter, bishop of Sebaste and Theosebia, a deaconess.
