Church bell stolen from Connecticut Orthodox church being demolished
Police are looking for the thieves who made off with a 300-pound, century-old bell from a demolition project at the Nativity of the Holy Virgin Orthodox Church, according to NBC CT.
The bronze bell, the smallest of three that used to ring from the church for more than a century, was stored on the property as workers demolished the church.
Thieves first came in June to steal scrap metal from the site and then took the bell by breaking into a storage container, the project manager Albert Well told NBC CT.
“They cut it with a die grinder,” Well said on how thieves were able to open the secured container. “Obviously they had tools.”
Waterbury police are asking anyone who has information on the bell to call (203) 574-6920.
