St. Photios Shrine Hosts Second Annual Indiction Lecture Series

The St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine proudly held its Second Annual Indiction Lecture Series on September 1, 2024, a day that featured profound spiritual reflection, intellectual discourse, and fellowship. Sponsored by Archontissa Angela Damianakis, LCSW, and underwritten by OIKOU.org, the event attracted distinguished attendees from Florida, Detroit, and New Jersey, marking it as a significant moment in the Shrine’s ongoing mission to foster community engagement and spiritual education.

The day began with a Hierarchical Indiction Service in the Shrine’s stunning Byzantine chapel, led by the esteemed Elder Metropolitan Dimitrios Couchel. Joining him were Fr. Joseph Samaan, Chancellor of the Antiochian Archdiocese, and other notable clergy and guests, setting a solemn and reflective tone for the day’s events.

A celebratory luncheon followed, where guests enjoyed moments of fellowship before the keynote lecture by Iconographer Archon Elias Damianakis. His “Ecological Asceticism” presentation explored the intersection of Orthodox Christian spirituality and environmental stewardship, a concept famously advocated by His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Damianakis eloquently conveyed the significance of this Orthodox teaching:

“The Greek Orthodox concept of ‘ecological asceticism’ profoundly expresses the Church’s understanding of the relationship between humanity and creation, rooted in the broader theological framework of Orthodox Christian spirituality,” he explained. “It emphasizes a disciplined and sacrificial approach to the natural world, recognizing it as a sacred gift entrusted to us by God.”

Through engaging storytelling, Damianakis referenced the Book of Genesis, the Psalms, and the Church Fathers, reminding attendees of humanity’s divine responsibility to care for creation: “At the heart of ecological asceticism is the Orthodox belief in the sanctity of creation. The world is not merely material but imbued with the divine presence, reflecting God’s glory.”

His message encouraged the audience to embrace simplicity, moderation, and responsibility in interacting with the environment, drawing parallels between the spiritual disciplines of fasting and environmental stewardship.

The lecture resonated deeply with the audience, sparking an enthusiastic question-and-answer session that enriched the discussion further. In addition, the event drew a steady stream of pilgrims and tourists, enhancing the Shrine’s lively and welcoming atmosphere in the heart of historic St. Augustine on St. George Street.

The Second Annual Indiction Lecture Series underscores the St. Photios Shrine’s dedication to fostering spiritual growth and dialogue through meaningful educational programs. Attendees left inspired by the day’s rich theological insights and the vibrant community atmosphere.
