Maliotis Cultural Center to Host “Greek Language, Culture, and Mass Media” International Summer University

The Maliotis Cultural Center is honored to announce the 11th International Summer University “Greek Language, Culture, and Mass Media,” with the theme “Diaspora mass media: challenges and prospects for the Greek language and culture.” The program is organized by the Laboratory for the Study of Social Issues, Media, and Education of the Early Childhood Education Department, School of Education, University of Ioannina, in collaboration with the Maliotis Cultural Center. It will be hosted at the Maliotis Center at Hellenic College in Boston from May 24 to May 29, 2025.

Program Themes

The topics to be explored include:

The international presence of diaspora mass media and their contribution to the modern
Greek culture
The contribution of the diaspora mass media towards spreading and preserving the Greek language
Depictions and representations of Greece in diaspora mass media
Diaspora mass media, identity, and multicultural horizons
Diaspora mass media and modern crises (memoranda, refugees, climate, war, energy)
Language representations and symbols
The teaching role of diaspora mass media
Possibilities for cooperation and synergies in the framework of a global forum for Greek diaspora mass media
Collaborations and Participants

The program, under the auspices of the Hellenic Parliament, will be implemented through the University of Ioannina’s Center for Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning and will include participation from the following organizations:

Ecumenical Patriarchate, Department of Greek Education
Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, Department of Greek Education
Greek Applied Linguistics Association
Athens and Macedonian News Agency
Study in Greece
Center for Hellenic Studies, University of Chicago
Fondazione Vexillum
Directors and journalists of Greek diaspora media from America, Europe, Australia, Asia, and Africa, as well as university professors, researchers, intellectuals, and artists from Greece and abroad, will participate.

Participation is free and is open to journalists, students (undergraduate and postgraduate), doctoral candidates, educators, and professionals with relevant interests. Certificates of participation and educational materials will be provided.

The program’s founder and scientific director is Professor Nicoletta Tsitsanoudi – Mallidi, Dean of the School of Education at the University of Ioannina and Associate in Linguistics at the Center for Hellenic Studies, Harvard University. The organizational direction in Boston is managed by the Executive Director of the Maliotis Cultural Center, Ms. Chrysoula Kourkounti.
