he Metropolitan of Limnos and Aghios Efstratios, Ierotheos, passed away on Monday after a short illness and hospitalization at a Mytilene hospital.

His Eminence was a graduate of the Athens University’s Faculty of Theology, with post-graduate studies at Oxford.

Ierotheos (Garifallos) was ordained in 1954 and served as a first secretary, minister and secondary school educator in the northwest Greek city of Kozani, London, Orestiada, in extreme northeast Greece, and finally, in Athens.

The reposed in the Lord hierarch served as the Secretary of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece’s Holy Synod between 1968 and 1988, as well as chief editor of the Church of Greece’s ecclesiastical calendar from 1974 to 1989.

Ierotheos was elected by Holy Synod members as the Metropolitan (Bishop) of Limnos and Aghios Efstratios – two islands in the northeast Aegean – in 1988.
